Aboriginal Employment Program (AEP) Project Manager tours with international Indigenous Rugby Union side A nail biting final in Paranaque City, a visit to an orphanage in Manila and playing on synthetic grass in Hong Kong where just some of the highlights for AEP’s Wayne Dargan during his tour with the Australian Indigenous Rugby team in South East Asia. The two tournament tour saw Wayne and his team mates from the all-Indigenous Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team compete in the Manila 10s tournament in Paranaque City, the Philippines and join teams from around the world in the Hong Kong 10s. Wayne, Project Manager and Mentor for AEP’s Koori Job Ready construction program, said playing and visiting a country as different as the Philippines was something he would never forget. “The conditions in the Philippines weren’t the best, the fields we played on were mainly dirt and we had lots of bruises and grazes by the end, but the locals love their rugby and we had a blast in the tournament – especially as we reached the final and were second overall.” For Wayne though the highlight of his trip was the team’s visit to an orphanage in Manila, “The visit to the orphanage was amazing and the smiles and laughs I saw that day I will never forget. We organised coaching clinics, played games of touch football and gave the kids all our old training gear in a special presentation. It was an amazing day.” After the Philippines the team moved onto Hong Kong for the 10s tournament where playing conditions were very different. “Hong Kong was on the other end of the spectrum for us. To go from playing rugby in a developing country like The Philippines to running around on synthetic grass, with the famous Happy Valley Racecourse as our backdrop, was an experience in its self. I’m really happy I got to do both.” Wayne comes from a Rugby League background, but was brought into the Lloyd McDermott Union team as a leader to guide the younger boys on the field.
