Christmas Markets offering Xmas food

The Eveleigh Christmas Markets in December are the ideal time to buy fresh farmer produce for the Christmas dining table.

Christmas turkeys, puddings, pork, lamb, beef, Christmas cakes, jams and more delicious treats will be available and fresh from the Eveleigh Farmers’ Markets on 19th December between the usual trading hours of 8am and 1pm.

“It’s about celebrating the year with stallholders and farmers and getting your fresh Chrissie produce to share with family and friends,” Eveleigh Markets Manager Ariana Aljinovic said.

The winner of the local Christmas Banner Schools Competition will be announced on Saturday 19th December.

Local schools and youth services groups have created Christmas banners to be displayed under the roof of the Blacksmiths Workshop for the chance to win the prize money for the winner, runner-up and people’s choice award categories.

All visitors to the markets will have a chance to vote for their favourite banner on the 12th December market day for the people’s choice award.

The markets will be in a celebratory mood having picked up the prestigious Sydney Morning Herald Foodies Award 2010 for Best Markets in Sydney in October.

“Ever since we started operating, community support for the Market has grown,” Ariana said. “A few weeks ago we had more than 4,000 people walking through the door. It is no wonder considering the amazing range of produce on offer from more than 65 stallholders.”

After only seven months in operation the Eveleigh Farmers’ Markets was an unexpected winner, trumping the competition on the criteria of “excellence of product, knowledge and understanding of what is stocked, attention to detail and engagement with business”.

Another strong credential is Eveleigh Markets’ engagement with community. A free community stall is on offer each week for local organisations or groups seeking to promote or educate the public, or raise funds for their cause.

Community press giants the Big Issue are also represented in the form of the charming magazine spruiker Nemo. Nemo has been happily running out of magazine copies and is quickly becoming a familiar face in the Eveleigh Markets landscape.
